Below are just a few events we have assisted with …….

Event 1: Arundel Festival

Sussex Scaffolding Ltd provide an events service to the Chichester, Southampton and Portsmouth areas including the erection of access scaffolding, scaffolding platforms, scaffold staging, Heras fencing, crowd barriers and steel hoarding.

We cover the Worthing, Brighton and Littlehampton areas including Petersfield and Midhurst areas including covering the A3 up to Guildford and Surrey.

Sussex scaffolding has recently secured an events contract with a Worthing based theatre and events management company for the Arundel festival event.

This is the first part of the contract where SSL erected a scaffold platform and scaffold screen to support a 6m x 6m cinema screen including Heras fencing for a late night film showing as part of the attractions for the Arundel Festival.

As you can see from the photos the scaffold platform was erected in the water at this event then progressively built to provide the finished protective screen using monaflex sheeting.

Event 2: Bognor Regis Birdman

The Bognor Birdman event started off in 1971 at the nearby holiday resort of Selsey involving contestants launching themselves off the Selsey lifeboat pier to try and achieve the furthest distance for a prize. The event evolved so much that in 1978 the event had to be moved to Bognor Regis due to the size of the venue being so big Selsey just couldn’t hold the 30,000 people who had travelled from all over to participate and to watch.

With the move to Bognor Regis came the increased height from the pier giving flyers a much better chance of achieving the distance needed to win the £10,000 prize money. Throughout the years many have tried but only a few have ever made the distance including a flyer in 1992 which flew an impressive distance of 89.2m which is still the current record.

Sussex scaffolding operatives have been involved in the construction and planning of the ramp for the past 4 years but this is the first year Sussex Scaffolding have designed and planned the erection of the main ramp themselves. We worked closely with Arun district council health and safety department submitting a design for approval that would hopefully bring the Birdman event back to Bognor Regis following the removal of part of the pier two years ago due to structural problems. For the past two years the event was moved to Worthing, West Sussex because it was thought the pier was too unsafe to use but though hard work and planning we have been part of the organisation to bring it back.

We are currently involved in a number of local events including the Arundel festival, Bognor Birdman and are currently planning with local authorities the Rox on the prom event for this year. Event 3: Rox on the prom event.

The Rox on the prom event started off in 1990 with about 150 people coming to watch local bands perform as part of a performing arts event arranged by local people. As the years went on the event went from strength to strength with local companies becoming involved with sponsoring the event giving the funding to hold the event in locations such as Bognor football club and Fontwell race course. For the last few years Rox has been held on the front lawn at the Royal Norfolk hotel, Bognor Regis with about three to five thousand people attending the event over the three days that it now covers due to the size and popularity of the event.

Sussex scaffolding has been indirectly a part of this event for a few years offering a range of services such as access ramps to the stage area and even the erection of the stage throughout the last 7 years.  This is the first year Sussex scaffolding provided these services ourselves including scaffold framework for bill boards positioned around the area. We pride ourselves on being involved with local charities and events in our local area as part of our company’s services to the local community.

Event 4 - Soap Box Derby Cancerwise Charity - Goodwood.

We were asked this to provide a ramp and platform for this year Soapbox Derby in the grounds of the Goodwood race track for the Cancerwise charity. The event was being held by a local events management company to raise money and awareness of the locally based charity.  The Soapbox Derby event is held a number of times each year at different locations but started out in 1914 in the motion picture called Kid Auto Races in Venice starring Charlie Chaplin. The first publically held event was in 1934. The Soapbox Derby is an event of cars competing in races that are completely relying on gravity to move.

This is a typical Soapbox ramp built by Sussex Scaffolding Ltd. The karts which are all hand made by a variety of age groups compete by launching themselves down the platform towards a finish line measuring speed and distance. The kart that travels the furthest or the fastest is the winner. During its most popular years in the 1950`s and 1960`s when the main sponsors in America was Chevrolet and famous movie stars made guest appearances, as many as 70,000 people would attend the events. The popularity of the event helped the setup in England in 1975 and is now such a huge attraction company`s like Redbull have staged events to promote their brands.

Event 5 - Brighton Ice Rink Event

For the first time the Brighton Pavilion building is having an ice rink installed for December and January and will be open over the Christmas holidays.

Sussex scaffolding provided all the Heras fencing security enclosure whilst the build is in progress and the Heras fencing will provide security while the event is open. We were involved in the planning of the fencing with the event management company and Brighton City Council giving them a number of options in regards to the type of fencing available and the best way to secure the site.

We also provided a number of areas of tree protection and erected the scaffolding framework with Heras panels installed to protect the trees and roots whilst the event is active. We included in the Heras fencing package vehicle access gates and pedestrian access gates which is part of the emergency exit policy`s imposed by Brighton Council.
